Natural Fibers
Why We Choose Natural Fibers
At Appalachian Surf Soap Co., we believe what we put on our bodies matters just as much as what we put in them. That philosophy extends beyond our handmade bath and body products to the clothing we choose to carry.
Our shop in Lawndale, North Carolina offers a curated collection of natural-fiber clothing and goods chosen for comfort, quality, longevity, and a lighter impact on the environment.
What Are Natural Fibers?
Natural fibers come from plants and animals rather than being created primarily from synthetic, petroleum-based materials.
We look for fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool, hemp, and other naturally derived fibers, with a particular appreciation for pieces made predominantly or entirely from natural materials.
Natural fibers have been worn for generations for good reason. They can be breathable, comfortable, durable, beautiful, and—when cared for properly—made to stay in your wardrobe for years.
Why Natural Fibers Matter to Us
Your clothing spends hours against your skin every day.
Natural fibers such as linen, cotton, and wool generally offer excellent breathability and moisture management. Rather than chasing every trend, we prefer clothing that feels good to wear, works in real life, and earns its place in your closet.
We also believe in knowing what our clothing is made from.
Choosing natural fibers isn’t about perfection. It’s about being more intentional—buying fewer pieces, paying attention to materials, caring for what we own, and choosing quality whenever we can.
Clothing Made to Stay
Fast fashion has made clothing incredibly disposable.
We want the opposite.
We seek out pieces with timeless silhouettes, useful fabrics, quality construction, and enough personality that you’ll still want to reach for them years from now.
Linen softens beautifully with wear. Quality cotton becomes an old favorite. Wool can provide years of warmth when properly cared for.
We would rather offer you one great sweater that becomes your sweater than five forgettable ones destined for the back of a closet.
Natural Fibers & the Environment
Our clothing choices have an environmental footprint, and no fiber is completely impact-free.
However, natural fibers offer some important advantages over conventional synthetic fabrics. Many synthetic textiles—including polyester, acrylic, and nylon—are derived from fossil fuels and can release tiny plastic fibers during wear and washing.
Natural fibers are derived from renewable plant or animal sources and, under appropriate conditions and without certain treatments or blends, can biodegrade more readily than conventional synthetic fibers.
That doesn’t automatically make every natural-fiber garment sustainable. How a fiber is grown, processed, dyed, manufactured, transported, worn, and eventually discarded all matter.
That’s why our philosophy is bigger than simply checking a fiber-content label.
Choose well. Wear often. Care for it. Keep it longer.
Better for Your Closet. Better for Your Life.
There is something different about clothing made from beautiful natural materials.
The weight of linen. The softness of worn cotton. The warmth of wool. The way these fabrics change with use instead of simply wearing out.
We want our clothing collection to feel collected rather than consumed—pieces that work for slow mornings, farmers markets, mountain weekends, beach trips, road trips, and ordinary Tuesdays.
Clothing should be lived in.
Where to Shop Appalachian Surf
Appalachian Surf Soap Co. is based in Lawndale, North Carolina, serving our local western North Carolina community through markets, pop-ups, and our mobile shop.
Along with natural-fiber clothing, we offer handmade soap and bath & body products, refillable home goods, accessories, vintage finds, North Carolina-made goods, and products from independent makers and brands we believe in.
Our collection changes often because we’d rather find interesting things than fill shelves with more of the same.
Can I Shop Online?
Absolutely.
Our natural-fiber clothing and other available goods can be purchased through our online shop and shipped throughout the United States.
Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1–3 business days.
Because many of our clothing pieces are intentionally sourced in smaller quantities, styles and sizes may sell out and may not always be restocked.
Our Standard
We aren’t interested in filling a store just to fill it.
We want to know what something is made from, who made it when possible, whether it serves a purpose, and whether we genuinely think it’s worth bringing home.
Not every item we carry will be perfect. Not every garment will be 100% natural fiber. But we will continue prioritizing natural materials, longevity, independent makers, responsible choices, and distinctive goods that are meant to be used and loved.
Buy less. Choose better. Wear it everywhere.
Wander well.
